New Kalafina song preview: Storia

    Kalafina-Storia
In other related Yuki Kajiura news (it's been a long time I've posted anything about her highness!), kalafina has a new Single coming out soon! It's called Storia and it's their first single that won't be featured in an anime, but this time in an NHK TV series entitled Rekishi Hiwa Historia. Yuki Kajiura will also be composing the soundtrack of the series... It looks like the girls of kalafina are channeling ukrainian folk dancers on the cover picture! HAHA

Here's a short sample of Storia available on Sony’s website. You can also download the 40 second kalafina sample here.

Thank you to CPM for the news! Like all kalafina songs, storia sounds like a hit... I can't wait to be the first of July when it finally comes out!

Fan Cover of Fairytale by Kalafina

    kalafina
Back in January, I did a piano cover of Fairytale, the kalafina theme song for the sixth Kara no Kyoukai movie. A month ago I received a message on my Youtube Channel from xFukairix telling me she had made a cover of Fairytale using my piano cover. I felt very honored that someone would use one of my piano covers to do a cover of their own, especially one this good! So thank you very much xFukairix for the lovely cover version of Fairytale, and if someone ever wants to use one my piano tracks to record a song, you're welcome! All I ask in return is that you mention my blog in the video description...

Download the mp3 version of my Fairytale piano cover here.

9/10 I really enjoyed listening to xFukairix's version of Fairytale! Her voice is really amazing and pure. It's a really hard song to master, but she managed to do a pretty good job. Her pronunciation is perfect, and despite some places where her voice is a little out of tune, her singing sounds very professional. I can't wait to hear more anime song covers from her.

In the meantime check out her version of Fairytale:

FictionJunctionThe Parallel Hearts Single has finally leaked (it's supposed to be released the 29th!)... It's always nice to have some fresh Yuki Kajiura songs, especially FictionJunction ones. And there's even a new FictionJunction YUUKA song on the single. What a treat!! In case you haven't heard my piano version of Parallel Hearts, here it is.

    1. Parallel Hearts
    2. Hitomi no Chikara (by FictionJunction YUUKA)
    3. Parallel Hearts ~Instrumental~
    4. Hitomi no Chikara ~Instrumental~

9/10 The full version of Parallel Hearts is of course even better than the TV-size version. I can't praise Yuki-sama enough for her awesome songs!!! I also really like the new YUUKA song, it's so nice they're doing songs together again... Even if I prefer the fast YUUKA songs, this one is still mesmerizing.

Check out the full PV, featuring Yuki Kajiura and FictionJunction:

Parallel Hearts CM - Pandora Hearts OP

Parallel HeartsHurray for some Yuki Kajiura related news! The Parallel Hearts CM for the Pandora Hearts anime just came out... Here's a sneak peak at the Parallel Hearts PV, featuring Yuki Kajiura on the piano and FictionJunction (which is now a group composed of Keiko, Wakana, Yuriko Kaida and Kaori). Parallel Hearts will be the first FictionJunction single, and I obviously can't wait for it! I also wonder, now that FictionJunction is a new group, does that mean it's the end for Kalafina?? Especially considering that Wakana and Keiko are parts of the 2 projects... Hmmm, I wonder. I would like both groups to exist, which would mean double the great songs!

And for those of you who still haven't seen the Pandora Hearts OP, here it is after the jump...

The Unofficial Yuri Kasahara Anime Compilation Album

Yuri KasaharaThe name of Yuri Kasahara is probably unknown to most anime and anime music fans, but I'm quite certain her voice isn't. She can be heard in anime series such as Gurren Lagann, Mai Otome, Madlax, Noir, Persona Trinity Soul, Black Cat... So, here's an album I put together with all of her anime related songs.

Yuri Kasahara (or Yuri Shinada) is one of Japan's best known opera singers. She has performed in a multitude of operas, such as in "The Magic Flute" by Mozart (playing The Queen of The Night) or "La Traviata" by Verdi. She has also sung over 100 songs in commercial and has composed music and written lyrics for a number of plays and operas.

For her anime related performances, she has worked with two of the best anime composers out there: Yuki Kajiura and Taku Iwasaki. The songs they have created together are some of my favorite anime songs of all-time. Her incredible voice is one of the best, if not the best I have ever heard in any anime related music. Songs such as Materialise, Places of the Holy, Salva Nos, ACCETTAMI, Der Mond zeigt mir meine eigene Gestalt or Libera me from Hell are simply masterpieces and give me the chills everytime I listen to them. That's why I urge every classical, anime or opera follower to listen to her songs... You won't be disappointed!

    Tracklist

    1. Materialise! (Mai-Otome)
    2. Places of the Holy (Madlax)
    3. To Find Your Flower (Madlax)
    4. Salva Nos (Noir)
    5. Maze (Noir)
    6. Secret Game (Noir)
    7. Red Rose (Yuki Kajiura Fiction album)
    8. Chigiri ~ Reverie Metherlence (Erementar Gerad)
    9. Kasukanari Aogi no Sai (Erementar Gerad)
    10. In a Beautiful Morning of May (Le Portrait de Petit Cossette)
    11. Moonflower (Le Portrait de Petit Cossette)
    12. Liminality (.Hack//Liminality)
    13. ACCETTAMI (Black Cat)

Pandora Hearts OP song - Parallel Hearts by FictionJunction

Pandora HeartsYuki Kajiura has really been working her ass off lately... Here is yet another example of her strong work ethic. Two months ago, I did a post on the trailer music for Pandora Hearts (here), the latest anime lucky enough to have its music composed by anime music godess Kajiura-san. She's also doing the OP theme song, Parallel Hearts, sung by FictionJunction (more like FictionJunction Wakana to me)...

9/10 Parallel Hearts promises to be yet another epic song from Yuki Kajiura and FictionJunction. Like I mentioned in the introduction of this post, main vocalist here is Wakana yet again. She's become Yuki's current obsession... And who could blame her? Background vocalist is again Keiko (kalafina anyone?) and I'm sure Yuriko Kaida's there somewhere. The song has a wonderful tune and a very catchy chorus... I wonder what Yuki's secret ingredient is, for making all these great songs, one after the other.

Check out the OP song for Pandora Hearts here:

Seventh Heaven by Kalafina - Album Review

kalafina seventh heavenI'm so happy I got the chance to listen to this album before its official release (Thank you Zuiyon and Adi!). I've been listening to it non-stop for 5 days now... It's quite a feat to have so much Yuki Kajiura music being released in just 2 weeks, between the FictionJunction album, the latest kalafina single, and the first kalafina album.

    Tracklist:

    1. overture
    2. oblivious
    3. love come down
    4. Natsu no Ringo
    5. fairytale
    6. ARIA
    7. Mata Kaze ga Tsuyokunatta
    8. Kizuato
    9. serenato
    10. Ongaku
    11. Ashita no Keshiki
    12. sprinter
    13. Kimi ga Hikari ni Kaete Iku
    14. seventh heaven

Watch the CM for the album here, it's really beautiful:

My Review of Seventh Heaven - 8/10

    1. overture

A true kajiuran intro for the debut album of kalafina... Soothing and mysterious like her slow BGM tracks.

    2. oblivious

This is the first kalafina single which was used as the theme song for the first Kara no Kyoukai movie. It's also the first kalafina song I ever heard, and after the first listen I wasn't really convinced by Kajiura's new project. I didn't like the song at all... I thought Yuki-sama wanted to go mainstream and commercial with the kalafina sound, which sounded too poppy for my taste. But now I actually really like oblivious, it's even one of my favorite kalafina songs! I think I initially wanted kalafina to be more like a FictionJunction v.2 project, but now I've come to appreciate the kalafina style and songs!

The rest is after the cut...

    3. love come down

I didn't expect a song like this one to be on the kalafina album. Love come down is a fast-pace song with a very technoish feel to it. After a few listens you get used to it, and it's actually not that bad.

    4. Natsu no Ringo

This song could have belonged on the El Cazador Soundtrack. Indeed, it features the same south-american sounding flute that held a prominent place on the El Cazadar OST. It has a typical kajiuresque melody and feel. I really like this one.

    5. fairytale

Fairytale is the theme song for the 6th Kara no Kyoukai movie. It's also one of my favorite kalafina songs. Check out my review here and my piano cover here. It still gives me goosebumps!

    6. ARIA

ARIA is the theme song for the fourth Kara no Kyoukai movie. It's also included in the second kalafina single. Thanks to this song, I was able to start appreciating kalafina. It's closer to that FictionJunction sound that I had initially missed. What I find particularly interesting in this song and in general in kalafinian songs is that choir-effect with the multi-layered voices. It's really intense and makes for a beautiful accompaniment throughout the song.

    7. Mata Kaze ga Tsuyokunatta

This song is the only J-Rock style track featured on this album. It's always weird to hear Yuki Kajiura composing rocky songs with a lot of electric guitars. We're not really used to that kind of sound coming from her. I nonetheless found myself enjoying this song quite a lot. I think it's because of the beautiful chorus and the string arrangements...

    8. Kizuato

Kizuato is the theme song for the third Kara no Kyoukai movie. It was the third track from the first kalafina single. This song reminds me of some See-Saw song, I just don't remember which one. It has that old-school kajiuran feel which I so much love... I could really see myself playing it on the piano! One of my favorites of the album.

    9. serenato

This song was on the fairytale single. It's not that bad, even though the chorus bugs me for some reason. I find it too simple and too repetitive! I know a lot of people really love this song, and I don't really understand why...

    10. Ongaku

Ongaku (hehe, same title as my blog) features some heavy techno beats and voice effects. I'm usually not a fan of those kind of songs, but I think Yuki Kajiura managed to pull it off! It has a very catchy chorus, and it's a fun song to listen to. But it's definitely not a typical kajiuran song.

    11. Ashita no Keshiki

This song is a really slow ballad, sad and heartfelt without being over-dramatic. It's not the best ballad of the album (which is either Fairytale or Seventh Heaven, I haven't decided yet), but it's still charming nonetheless.

    12. sprinter

This is the theme song for the fifth Kara no Kyoukai movie. It's also the second kalafina single. It's the second I heard from kalafina, and just like the first one (oblivious) I disliked it the first time I heard it. It has grown on me, and I'd even go as to say that I like it, even though it's not one of my favorite kalafina songs. Again, I think the chorus could have been better...

    13. Kimi ga Hikari ni Kaete Iku

Yet another piano ballad, this is the theme song for the second Kara no Kyoukai movie. A very moving song that also features one of my favorite instruments, the cello. This song is easily one of my favorites from this album. I just love Wakana's voice in this song. Her pure and angelic voice is truly one the main reasons that made me fall in love with kalafina!

    14. seventh heaven

Apparently seventh heaven will be the theme song for the 7th and final Kara no Kyoukai movie. In my opinion, this song is one of the best tracks of the album if not THE best! It's one of the best ballads Yuki Kajiura has ever written. So many emotions flow into this song. It's a pure delight for the ears!

Kuroshitsuji ED2 Full Single - Lacrimosa by Kalafina

Kalafina - LacrimosaBack in January, I reviewed the latest kalafina song (here) which is not Kara no Kyoukai-related (for a change, haha!). Well here's the single with the long version. This week has truly been Kajiuresqe!! (And it's not over yet...).

    Tracklist:

    1. Lacrimosa
    2. Gloria
    3. Lacrimosa (Instrumental)

9/10 The longer version is even better than the TV-size version (no surprises there!) I especially love the choirs and drums part from 2:52 to 3:00. It's so epic! The second track on the Single, Gloria, is a beautiful piano ballad. A must-have!! Yuki Kajiura always finds ways to outdo herself. It's truly amazing...

Album Review - Everlasting Songs (feat. FictionJunction) by Yuki Kajiura

FictionJunction singersI've been listening to the new Yuki Kajiura album for a few days now. A week ago, I posted the samples of each track(here). I wanted to write about my impression as soon as I finished listening to all the tracks, but for the reasons mentioned in my previous posts, I couldn't bring myself to it. Technically it isn't really a new album. It's more like a remix album, with rearrangements and new vocalists for most of the songs...

    Tracklist:

    1. Hoshikuzu (The Velveteen Rabbit - self cover of Velvet no Inori)
    2. Kioku no Mori (Tsubasa Chronicle OAD: Shunraiki)
    3. dream scape (Tsubasa Chronicle)
    4. Gin no Hashi (Aquarian Age)
    5. Kaze no Machi he (Tsubasa Chronicle Insert)
    6. here we stand in the morning dew (Sayonara Solitia single c/w)
    7. synchronicity (Tsubasa TOKYO REVELATIONS)
    8. Hanamori no Oka (Hokuto no Ken: Toki Den)
    9. Mizu no Akashi (Gundam SEED)
    10. cazador del amor (El Cazador)
    11. Himitsu (Noir)
    12. Houseki (Le Portrait de Petite Cossette)
    13. Yume no Tsubasa (Tsubasa Chronicle)
    14. Michiyuki (LOVELESS)
    15. everlasting song (Elemental Gelade)

    My Review

7/10 My overall impression is a positive one. I like most of the new re-arranged songs, but I also liked the original one a lot as well, so I've had mixed feelings while reviewing the album. I would have much preferred having new Kajiuran tracks and more epicness (maybe in Ali Project orchestral remix-style! ).

For the track-by-track review, click here.

    Hoshikuzu KAORI/KEIKO

The first track is a cover of the Velveteen Rabbit song, Velvet no Inori, originally sung by Noriko Ogawa. Instrumental wise, the only difference is the long instrumental intro that the original song didn't have. This song is a pure pleasure, and I'm having a hard time deciding with version I prefer. Noriko's voice sounds more mature but has a more fragile feel to it than Keiko's or Kaori's. I would have liked to have a different take on the background music though...

    Kioku no Mori YUUKA

This is one of the only songs I hadn't heard before. It's from the Tsubasa Chronicle OAD: Shunraiki and features my favorite FictionJunction Vocalist, Yuuka Nanri! It was so nice to hear a new song from her! I was missing her voice so much. The song reminds me of the Madlax songs and more specifically I'm here from the ED single. I love the techno beat and the very catchy chorus. In short, a typical FictionJunction song, since Yuuka is the original FJ vocalist!

    Dream scape KAORI

No change from the original version here (Tsubasa Chronicle OST). It would have been nice to hear a re-arranged version, maybe with a different vocalist...

    Gin no Hashi WAKANA/KEIKO/KAORI

This is one of the other songs that I had never heard (Shame on me). Apparently the original track is a character song from the Aquarian Age anime. It's nice to have Wakana, Keiko and Kaori sing together. It feels like the Volume 2 DVD concert over again. The song itself is not bad, but not breathtaking either...

    Kaze no machi he KEIKO

Same version as the original one from the Tsubasa Chronicle OST. Shame on you Yuki! Why didn't you try it with different arrangements??

Here we stand in the morning dew YURIKO KAIDA

This is one of the other songs that was new to me. It's from the Sayonara Solitia single (whatever that is, I'm to lazy to google it) and it is originally sung by Saeko Chiba. It's nice to have some FictionJunction YURIKO KAIDA for a change! It must feel great not to just be in the background anymore. I have mixed feelings about her voice though. I think she sounds a lot better as a background singer, especially for this song. She has a particular vibrato, and I think for people who are not used to her voice, it can take a while to get used to. Nevertheless, I can say that I enjoyed the song, but only after a few listens!

    Synchronicity KEIKO

This was the song I liked the least on the album (Tsubasa TOKYO REVELATIONS). What an atrocious remix! What were they thinking? I really loved the original (here's my piano cover) and I think Yui Makino's voice is much better suited than Keiko's.

    Hanamori no oka KAORI

This was the last song that I had previously never heard, and it's one of my favorites!! It has that epic kajiuran feel I was talking about, that some songs on this album are lacking. It's from the Hokuto no Ken: Toki Den anime. I really love the drum roll for the chorus, it makes the song feel so much more powerful! A true joy... I think it's my favorite Kaori song yet!

    Mizu no akashi WAKANA

What a treat! I was in love with the original Gundam SEED version, featuring Tanaka Rie. But I love both versions now... Wakana is amazing as ever, and the song is really suited to her beautiful and soaring voice! The music is different than from the original version. No beats in this one. Just a piano and a cello! Superb...

    Cazador del amor YUUKA

No change from the original song featured in the El Cazador soundtrack. A beautiful song by Yuuka!

    Himitsu YURIKO KAIDA

This is one of the few examples of songs that are much better than the original versions... This song from Noir was rather dull and sad, and Yuriko managed to make it more powerful...

    Houseki KEIKO

Houseki from Le Portrait de Petite Cossette. I like both versions of the song. The original song was sung by Marina Inoue but Keiko manages to pull it off in this song. The piano ending is really nice and much better than the bells ending featured in the original song.

    Yume no tsubasa KAORI

This is a big change from the childish singing Yui Makino originally had forthis song (Tsubasa Chronicle yet again). Kaori's voice is much better in my opinion, even if the Yui Makino version doesn't bother me that much. In short, a big improvement...

    Michiyuki KAORI

I've always loved this song featured in the Loveless anime. Such a peaceful and sad ballad. The original version was sung by another Kaori, Kaori Hikida. This is another hard choice, I don't know which of the versions I prefer. Both are beautiful... Maybe I would have to pick the original one, because Kaori Hikida has such an amazing voice.

Everlasting song ~ japanese edition ASUKA

Same version than the original song from Erementar Gerad! Such a shame that Asuka does not have more songs with Yuki Kajiura. She must be feeling so left out... Anyway, Everlasting Song is always a delight to my ears (check out my piano cover here).

Samples from Everlasting Songs - FictionJunction Album by Yuki Kajiura

FictionJunction AlbumToday is a great day for Yuki Kajiura lovers... Or at least for me, after hearing a sample from each track of the new Yuki Kajiura album entitled Everlasting Songs. It's basically a compilation album with FictionJunction songs and new arrangements. I can't wait... The album is set for release on February 25, 2009. All FictionJunction vocalists will contribute: Yuuka Nanri, Keiko Kubota, Wakana Ootaki, Kaori Oda, Asuka Kato, and Yuriko Kaida. FictionJunction has always been my favorite Yuki Kajiura project, so this is of course great news! (Special thank you to Allexiel from fictionjunction.be for telling me all about the samples and also to Canta-per-me!)

Gundam SEED Destiny B-Side - Seijaku wa Headphone no Naka by See-Saw

Gundam SEED DestinySome weeks ago, I was asked to cover Seijaku wa Headphone no Naka by See-Saw. For those of you who have never heard this awesome song, don't despair... It's actually a B-Side on the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny ED4 Single Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru by See-Saw. If you still don't know what See-Saw is, it's basically a pop duo with Chiaki Ishikawa and Yuki Kajiura, two of my favorite artists.

10/10 Seijaku wa Headphone no Naka (or the Headphone song as I used to call it) is one of See-Saw's most amazing songs! I'm sure it went hardly unnoticed due to the fact that it was a B-Side, which is quite a shame. I consider it to be even better than the Gundam SEED Destiny ED theme song Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru. It has a typical kajiuran melody with a beautiful piano part and a wonderful flute solo... I love it so much. Chiaki's voice is also a pure delight in this song (as usual!).

You really have to check it out here (I will be posting my piano cover soon):

Yuki Kajiura Month is over - One Last Giveaway...

Yuki and RevoI proclaimed last month as the Yuki Kajiura Month, so it is with great sadness that I officially announce that the Yuki Kajiura month is now over... But fear not, I will be sure to keep you all updated on the latest Yuki Kajiura music... I hope you all enjoyed the Yuki Kajiura DVD Live Vol. 2 videos that I posted every day of last month (here).

As a parting gift, I chose to share with you one of the best non-anime project Yuki last did. Last year she did a collaboration with composer Revo from the Sound Horizon group, called Dream Port. They performed together at a series of live concerts, and a Collaboration Single was also released with the song Sajin no Kanata e which is the Main Theme of Dream Port and its instrumental version. The single also contains a DVD which includes a live performance of Sajin no Kanata e, at a Dream Port 2008 concert.

    Tracklist:

    1. Sajin no Kanata e
    2. Sand Dream (Arranged instrumental version of Sajin no Kanata e)

    Vocalists:

Yuki Kajiura, Revo, Yuri Kasahara, Yuriko Kaida, FictionJunction YUUKA / KEIKO / WAKANA / KAORI and all of Sound Horizon.

10/10 This is quite an amazing Yuki Kajiura song! I'm not familiar with any of Revo's work, but even though he did compose Sajin no Kanata e with Yuki, the song definitely sounds kajiuran to me. It reminds me of a lot of older songs she did with FictionJunction and for the Tsubasa Chronicles. I also really love the live version of the song. I've never seen so many amazing singers sharing a stage together. I love it that the song starts off with my uber-favorite Yuri Kasahara (too bad she had a really small part...). I also love the solo part with Yuki Kajiura and Revo singing... It was my first time hearing her voice, and I'm sure I've already heard it in a couple of songs she did. It's so exquisite... My main concern was that Yuuka didn't have any solo parts and the camera didn't really show her that much. Wakana and Kaori got to sing a lot, and they killed it as usual!

This is a must-see for any Kajiuran fans, so check out the live performance with the subs:
