snow in new orleans - Clearing skies in Shreveport, snowing in New Orleans

It sounds backward -- but snow was falling in New Orleans and the skies were clearing in North Louisiana.

The National Weather Service said a mixture of sleet and snow is falling this morning across much of southeastern Louisiana, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

The winter weather closed some schools and created hazardous driving conditions in an area not accustomed to wintry weather.

Forecasters say the wintry mix is expected to diminish to a mixture of patchy light rain and light sleet by noon. The ground is expected to remain warm with temperatures above freezing.

Most of the ArkLaTex dodged trouble overnight. Skies were clearing this morning and the high temperature today is expected around 50. The low tonight is expected around 30.

There was a little sleet mixed with rain around midnight in Shreveport but temperatures were above freezing and it did not stick.

There were reports of sleet from Nacogdoches to Center, Texas and other parts of the Toledo Bend area. A quarter of an inch of sleet was reported on car tops in Center and weather watchers reported snow in Natchitoches.

Half an inch to two inches of snow fell overnight in southern Louisiana.
