What's On Tonight: Changes at 'CSI,' More 'Planet in Peril'

Changes are coming to "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (CBS, 9 p.m.), consistently one of TV's top-rated shows.

Tonight, William Petersen's Gil Grissom, mentioning the "tough year" they've had at the lab, tells his colleagues he's leaving.

It will take a month before he actually leaves the series, but until then, it's time to introduce the figure who will be joining the cast in his absence.

Laurence Fishburne brings a weight and sobering hand on the proceedings as criminal pathologist Dr. Raymond Langston, who specializes in serial killers. But when Grissom crashes his class as a killer is being interviewed by the class, he's not too happy.

It's the final Thursday episode for "Survivor: Gabon" (CBS, 8 p.m.), which has turned into a pretty good season mostly because its unexpected crew of outsiders have deftly picked off the stronger competitors one by one. The remaining contestants now must find a path to the Sunday finale.

It's not clear how Anderson Cooper can find the time to fly to far flung corners of the globe to report on things like monkey pox in the second installment of "Planet in Peril" (CNN, 9 p.m.). There may be two of him. Like the first, the documentary of environmental panic  is more like a compendium of random reports from all over. Also reporting: Dr. Sanjay Gupta and the ubiquitous Lisa Ling.

The month's most controversial new series so far is "Secret Millionaire" (Fox, 8 p.m.) in which the rich last week learned everything there is to know about poverty by being denied use of their private jet for a week. In the end they give up about a week's walking around money to those who need it. And there may be tears. But we still we don't feel so good about the economy.

Christmas episodes for many series as well including "My Name is Earl" (NBC, 8 p.m.), "Kath & Kim" (NBC, 8:30 p.m.), "The Office" (NBC, 9 p.m.), "30 Rock" (NBC, 9:30 p.m.) and "ER" (NBC, 10 p.m.).

Other specials include the "A Renaissance Christmas" (WGBY, Channel 57, 10 p.m.), "Rudolph's Shiny New Year" (ABC Family, 7 p.m.), "The Year Without a Santa Claus" (ABC Family, 8 p.m.), "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys" (ABC Family, 9 p.m.) and "Twas the Night Before Christmas" (ABC Family, 10:30 p.m.).

Christmas movies include "Christmas Child" (Lifetime, 9 p.m.), "Moonlight and Mistletoe" (Hallmark, 9 p.m.), "Christmas Town" (ION, 9 p.m.) and "Finding John Christmas" (Hallmark, 11 p.m.).

"The Bells of St. Marys" (TCM, 8 p.m.) kicks off a night of Bing Crosby movies, including "Pennies from Heaven" (TCM, 10:15 p.m.), "High Society" (11:45 p.m.) and "Road to Bali" (1:45 a.m.). But no, not "White Christmas" or "Holiday Inn" (which are not on the Turner Classic Movies schedule this month!).

At a time when it should be "Christmas Vacation," we instead get "National Lampoon's Vacation" (MyNetworkTV, 8 p.m.), now 25 years old.

The day before the remake opens at the box office, with Keanu Reeves almost too well suited to be the alien, the 1951 original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (AMC, 8 p.m.) gets a screening. Klaatu barada nikto!

Other threats to the public abound in "The Thing" (Sci Fi, 7 p.m.), "Yeti" (Sci Fi, 9 p.m.), "Hannibal" (Bravo, 9 p.m.) and  "King Cobra" (Sci Fi, 11 p.m.).

One of the main challenges of "Dolphin Murder Mystery" (Animal Planet, 8 and 11 p.m.): Keeping the fedoras on.

If you're up early this morning, nominations for the Golden Globes are announced during the morning shows; they'll be given in a month.

In sports, we prefer trophies to be given at the end of games, when the players are all giddy and sweaty, the coach soaked in Gatorade and everybody wearing instantly timely championship caps that would have been obsolete had the field goal attempt failed. Others like a more dignified setting, never mind how those giant necks look in a suit and tie. Hence the ESPNU College Football Awards (ESPN, 7:30 p.m; ESPN2, 10 p.m.) from Orlando.
NBA action includes Celtics at Wizards (TNT, CSN, 8 p.m.) and Trail Blazers at Jazz (TNT, 10:30 p.m.). In college basketball it's St. Joseph's at Villanova (ESPN2, 8 p.m.).
