DETROIT - The ingredients that made up the Vikings' game Sunday against the hapless Detroit Lions point to the possibility that a major upset took place.
Among them: Quarterback Gus Frerotte was forced to leave late in the first half because of a bruised lower back and did not return. Running back Adrian Peterson fumbled the football three times and nearly had four. And after a week of telling everyone that they weren't about to take the winless Lions lightly, the Vikings appeared to do just that as they fell behind after the first 30 minutes.
But no matter how generous the visitors tried to be, the winless Lions were unable to take advantage. Backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson was able to rally the Vikings to a 20-16 victory, extending the team's winning streak to three games and maintaining its one-game lead over Chicago in the NFC North.
"There was never a sense of panic," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "That is what I like about these guys. But I was very surprised that we came in and played the way we did early based on their preparation. ... A grind-it-out win. We will make absolutely no apologies for it."
Childress put no timetable on how long Frerotte might be out, but his absence certainly could extend to next Sunday's game at Arizona. There also is a chance Childress could consider a switch back to Jackson, who lost his job after the season's first two games.
Childress, though, had other things beside his quarterback situation on which to focus Sunday. The Vikings, who won by only two points in the teams' first meeting in October, came out flat and seemed uninspired as they fell behind 6-3 in the opening half.
At halftime Childress had seen enough and had, in his words, a "come to Jesus" meeting with his players.
