Amazing Robot that looks like human

Amazing Robot that looks like human.  It's true.  If you ever watch Blade Runner, Alien, AI and Terminator, the vision is coming true. These are real human look alike androids. A little creepy but amazing. It’s actually called a Geminoid, which is a lifelike robot created to look exactly like its master. Geminoids are controlled by a computer system that replicates movements. The video shows the latest version of a concept started in 2005. This guy actually remind me of Bishop, the android from Aliens.  It is a little creepy looking, but certainly it looks so close to real human with if facial movement.




Watch this robot, it will blow you away.


For real?

Wow, I never thought I would be able to see a real robot that look like human in my life time. Like I said in my previous post on robots, skynet is coming and the day of terminator is near.

Digital painting tutorial Dead Space 2 inspired

Here is a digital painting video and step by step tutorial inspired by playing Dead Space 2.  I was playing in for a while and I love it.  Though it is very spooky and creepy.  A lot of interesting scary creatures or humanoids called "necromorphs." I really like the main armor designs, there are many cool armors in this game.
As this blog progress, I am trying to make the painting a little more cinematic or storyboard frame like rather than character pin ups.  I think the format fits speed painting best.  Also I get to push myself further and further by challenging myself to find good composition and define lighting in the scene.  So if you are looking for basic drawing or painting tutorial, please look at the thumbnails above the blog or the right column.  If you scroll down the menu on the right column, you will find most of the basic and all the tutorials there.
And once in a blue moon, I will make a basic drawing tutorial, photoshop tips and tricks for painting and some art article that I find interesting.


Most of my step by step are very similar, only sometimes I will start of using just shapes.  I usually scribble or draw it out first in the most basic form.  Then I will paint a flat value onto the drawing to create a cool and clean silhouette.  After that I will refine the shape and the surrounding more by using value and edges.


Here is a final image, it could be further refine, but it's speedpainting so I have to stop.  (almost 2 hours)

The day of terminator is near?

The day of terminator is near? I love robots, even more so giant robots since I was a little kid. Too bad I didn't end up being a Robotics engineer. Well, just the thought of that would be really weird. Anyway, I end up design characters and creatures for video games instead of a real robot.  I read WSJ about US military is ordering more robots this morning.  So I thought, we might very close to the day of "Skynet" if we put all of these together.  Or are we there?


Anyway, this post is not about me. It is about us and where we are heading with our robotic technology. Recently there is "Watson", a super computer from IBM on Jeopardy. Watson seems to represent a giant leap forward in the field of natural-language processing—the ability to understand and respond to everyday English. It's not a surprise to me that IBM's Watson super computer beat 2 of the greatest Jeopardy champs (humans) in three rounds of head to head action. What do we expect? Humans will win in memory contest over a computer? But anyway, that was impressive.

Other than  the awesomeness of Watson, there are others.  They might not be as smart, but they are the stepping stone to the T-days.  Meet BIG DOG, BigDog is the alpha male of the Boston Dynamics robots. It is a rough-terrain robot that walks, runs, climbs and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by an engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system.

Other than big dog, now US military also commission Boston Dynamics, to develop two new robots: one will be a super fast quadruped called Cheetah, the other is a beautifully intricate, freakishly scary full-size humanoid called Atlas.   Having seen all these, I am hopeful that I will get to see a fully function giant robot in my life time.  Images are below.
