Sucker Punch movie digital painting process speedie. I am waiting for my Sucker Punch concept art book. It still has not yet arrive, hopefully some time today. So I just watched the trailer again and study the cinematic shots (paused it). Some of the great artists I know often study movie screenshots, apart from painting and drawing from life. Drawing and painting from still life is very essential to all artists, though screenshots from many great visual movie can compliment your art skill in composition arrangement. Most of really great cinematographers have eye for edgy and great compositions. Still screenshots can be very useful for studying. And this is what I am doing for this post.


There are many things I can learn from studying really good screenshot. First of all is composition. As you can see the one I painted, it has nice anticipation moment with some great element that catch your eyes. Then I can also learn great lighting from it. Lighting is very important in painting because without light source, your painting would be just a pitch black canvas.


In this one, I just start sketching out the two main elements, characters, in the scene first. Then I look for where the dark arrange within the composition and I went after it. When I am done arranging the dark part, as you can see in the second panel. If you think about it, there is not really that much left to do except for giving the painting more lighting and hue variation. Do it right, it should not take you much time to study. Unless you want to craft out your masterpiece. Study like this can be really useful in the future when you just have to paint some concept piece without references. It makes you see how lighting and composition works. The more study you do, the better understanding of lighting you will be.

Dead Space 2 review and tips

Dead Space 2 review and tips.
I've been spending more time playing some great quality video games recently. Other than drawing, painting and making art tutorials, of course. Dead Space 2 is one of them. Other than its scary haunting Dead Space 2 soundtrack from the game which I love. Dead Space 2 is an amazing game. I the surprise and the scary moments, cool kills, and how much I dig the main character's design and personal issue. While other horror games are taking a few step backward (RE4), Dead Space, however, was all that RE4 should have been.

Picking up an unknown amount of time after the events of the first Dead Space, Dead Space 2 again follows the portentously named engineer Isaac Clarke, this time as he makes his way through the innards, outards and around-ards of a massive space station called The Sprawl. Isaac has lost his memory and a fair bit of his mind, and is attempting both to discover what happened to him and to escape the facility alive. It all comes back to the game's atmosphere, a combination of sound design and scripting that few games can claim to match. New enemies types like the swift, evasive Stalker spice things up nicely as well, but there's still not a whole lot of enemy variation.
Overall, Dead Space 2 is a poster boy for violent carnage, but the unnerving clash between Visceral Games' desire to refocus and remodel Isaac and the situation he finds himself in is epitomised nicely about two-thirds of the way through the game.

BulletStorm inspired speed painting process

I've been enjoying Bullet Storm for the past few days. The game looks gorgeous and the game play is awesome. It is pretty violent, but really what else do we expect from 1st person shooter games. We buy and play shooter games because we want to, well, shoot! I would not recommend it for kids under 17 though because it is ultra violent and tons of blood splatting action.
Then it's time to paint but I couldn't get the fun off of my mind. So I decided to just paint a piece inspired by Bullet Storm.
In this speedy, I used tons of custom brushes. Yes, I think it is time for me to really go all out with custom brushes. Since I started this blog, I've been holding out on using custom brushes just to get the point across. Get the foundation first, which are shape (correct drawing), value, color and edges. Once you get it, no matter what brush you use, it will be good.
This piece, I basically start out very much the same with a lot of my work. There are 2 ways I start either with line drawn or silhouette. Well, the line drawn will end up being silhouette or shape. So yeah basically both are very similar. Then I try to figure out the lighting (value), then hue (color), then play around with edges and harmonize the piece.  This one took me almost two hours.  Fun time.

And below is what blasting on my headphone when I was painting the scene. There are a few songs, click fast forward for the next.  I love these tones of aggressive riff compose with war drum beats. They help me get lost in my own imagination.  Or was it the composer's imagination?  ;-)
