Smith County inmate accused of murder, cannibalism dies in jail

    A Smith County Jail inmate who is believed to be responsible for the the murder and cannibalism of his Whitehouse girlfriend has died. 

    Smith County Sheriff's officials say they found Christopher McCuin, 26, unresponsive in his jail cell Sunday afternoon, with just a faint pulse.

    McCuin was awaiting trial for allegedly kidnapping and murdering Jana Shearer, 21, back in January.

    Jail medical staff started CPR on McCuin before paramedics took him to the hospital, according to jail officials, and JP James Meredith pronounced McCuin dead at ETMC Sunday afternoon.

    Investigators say there were no signs of foul play, and McCuin had been seen by medical staff before.

    His body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy, and the Texas Rangers are now investigating.
