The World God Only Knows

Rating: 4
At first, I was concerned that Keima's mission might mean that he's inadvertently leading these girls on, only to leave them hanging in subsequent episodes, but if the first episode's any indication, he's just giving these girls the shoulder they need to lean on. The World God Only Knows may sound silly, but I'm willing to give this a few more episodes. It's cute and funny, and despite some of the overused gags, it's a new take on an old genre.

Director Imaishi should have taken more than visual cues from famous Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network flagships and learned a little comedy writing from them too. Even the most unbearable shows created by Steve Ressel and others are more creative and well-written than this. (I mention Ressel particularly because Invader Zim is the most blatantly parodied show present in P&S.) Every joke in Powerpuff Girls All Grown Up here is poorly timed, base, and dare I say it: angry! It's not a fun raunchy romp, there's an air of desperation, like the show is spiting us for trying to laugh at it and it wants to be too edgy to handle just by virtue of repeating a lot of foul words.

The screenshots elicit more smiles than the show itself. I can't identify it, but there's a poisonous air hanging around this mess that just makes it unpleasant to sit through even if all the gags weren't all just seeing how many times the girls can talk about shit and jizz with no punchline.

All the same, I can see that ghostly plumber now, examining this show's underbelly and shaking his head before these bitchy and thoroughly unlikable ladies beat him to death for pointing out the obvious. His final words? “Well there's your problem, girls! This just isn't funny.” Edgy? Nasty? Sure, but like Mitsudomoe, I feel like I'm being entertained by a middle schooler who still thinks a script based entirely around the same dick joke is comedy gold…except Mitsudomoe was trying to be creative and varied. This is gross, repetitive and downright painful.

Plot story summary
Kyousuke Kousaka, a normal seventeen-year-old high school student, hasn't gotten along with his younger sister, Kirino, in years. For longer than he can remember, Kirino has ignored his comings and goings and looked at him with spurning eyes. It seemed as if the relationship between Kyousuke and his sister, now fourteen, would continue this way forever.

One day, however, Kyousuke finds a DVD case of a magical girl anime entitled Hoshikuzu Witch Merle (Stardust Witch Merle), which had fallen into the entranceway of his house. To Kyousuke's surprise, inside the case is a hidden adult video game titled Imouto to Koishiyo! (Love with Little Sister!). Kyousuke attempts to fish out the culprit who dropped the case by bringing up the topic of magical girl anime at the family dinner table. All that comes out is a strong negative reaction from his parents, especially his anti-otaku policeman father.

That night, Kirino bursts into Kyousuke's room and, in perhaps the first conversation she has initiated with him in years, says they "have things to talk about." Kirino brings Kyousuke to her room and shows him an extensive collection of moe anime and lolicon bishoujo games she has been collecting in secret.

Legend has it that storks would bathe in the marshes of Kinosaki to heal their wounds. Later, bath houses were built over these very sites to take advantage of the healing waters. Since then Kinosaki has become a top onsen destination in the Kansai region.

Nowadays there are numerous ryokan in the area, all with their own baths, but the real draw to Kinosaki are the seven public bath house (sotoyu). Also scattered throughout town are some beautiful foot baths (ashiyu) and spring water drinking fountains.

Goshono-yu
Hours: 7:00 to 23:00
Closed: First and third Thursday of each month
Fee: 800 yen
Completely redesigned and rebuilt in 2005, Goshono-yu ("imperial palace bath") is one of Kinosaki's larger bath houses, featuring a multi-level outdoor bath facing a waterfall, as well as a granite water bench and a steam sauna where onsen water is sprayed into the air to create a fine mist.


Mandara-yu
Hours: 15:00 to 23:00
Closed: Wednesdays
Fee: 600 yen
Mandara-yu is the only bath house that is located off the main road. You'll find it one block south of the main road (Yunosatodori) just before the road turns north to the ropeway entrance. Its outdoor bath looks enticing, and it is said that Mandara-yu has the most attractive of the public baths.


Kono-yu
Hours: 7:00 to 23:00
Closed: Tuesdays
Fee: 600 yen
Kono-yu is near the ropeway entrance located on the spot where legend says that storks would bathe to heal their wounds. It was the first bath house in Kinosaki, although it has been rebuilt numerous times since its founding. Kono-yu features an outdoor bath with a view of the surrounding forests.

Visitors staying at a local ryokan can use Kinosaki's seven public bath houses for free between check-in and check-out. In order to gain free admission, they need to wear the ryokan's yukata and bring admission coupons provided by the ryokan.

Many visitors decide to skip their ryokan's bath in favor of a sotoyu meguri (bath stroll), walking around sampling the various public baths. In the past it was also customary to visit Onsenji Temple to make a prayer before bathing, but this is not a common practice anymore.

When visiting public baths, it is recommended that you bring your own towels or towels provided by the ryokan, although, towels are also available for purchase or rental at bath houses. Soap and shampoo are provided within the baths.

How to get there
Kinosaki's seven public baths are scattered across the town, about 100 to 400 meters apart from each other. All can be reached on foot. It takes about 15-25 minutes to walk from the station to the most distant bath house, the Kono-yu.
